about
I wrote this song as an exercise following a particular lyrical format that didn't lend itself to writing music. It tells the story of a piece of artwork, a bright eagle, that was given to me by my paternal grandmother, Hazel (the proprietrix of Hadees Market).
In late 2018, my dear friend Chris Livesay (from Seattle's The Civilians) came to visit me when I lived on an island in the Salish Sea, and after dinner, we pulled out the the guitars and traded songs. I asked if he'd like to write some music to accompany the words below. I handed him the lyrics sheet and in about four minutes he had worked out the chords and melody.
Fast forward to 2020, and Chris and I met up at Earwig Studio with Don Farwell at the board, and asked the amazing Jen Gilleran to accompany us on cajon. This is a studio recording, but what you hear is the three of us bringing the song to life, playing together with no overdubs.
lyrics
This Bright Eagle
There at the start you would call it art
Losing ourselves in the painting
When it was done you had brought us war
Revolution in the making
And when the colors come
I feel unnumbed
There's a vibrance in my mind
I feel the hum because I'm overcome
Inside the sky (underneath the sky)
Each one revealed in the blackened field
Colors jump forth in an instant
Each rend is sealed and with stitches healed
Animal's call's insistent
And when the colors flood
I just succumb
There's a river in my mind
I feel the hum because I'm overcome
Inside the sky (underneath the sky)
You can try to stop my culture
Steal our language and our customs
We can fight you and we're willing
Hands for sewing, not for killing
And when the colors come
I feel unnumbed
There's a vibrance in my mind
I feel the hum because I'm overcome
Inside the sky (underneath the sky)
Oh, beat the drum and we'll become
a people unaligned
I feel the hum because we'll overcome
beneath the sky,
Beneath the sky (underneath the sky)
Inside the sky (underneath the sky)
